What is Tagging and why is it important?
Tagging your music correctly is one of the most important things to do on Jamendo. After uploading your track, you will come to the edit mode where you must enter tags related to the song. You need to do this separately for every song!
The more accurate your tags are the better chance for your track to end up in the charts and be found through the search bar.
Those tags & metadata will play a huge role in the ability of your tracks to appear in relevant searches made by users and customers: they need to be as accurate as possible and need to be a true reflection of what your track really is. If a jazz track is tagged as being rock, then it'll be displayed in searches made by users willing to discover rock. This isn't good, neither for the user nor for you.
The tags consist of the following:
- The Genre: Pop, Pop-Rock, Rock, Metal, Electronic, etc.
- The Subgenre: DreamPop, Alternative Rock, Artrock, Punk, Doommetal, House, Techno, etc.
- The Themes & Moods: Soft, Energetic, Party, Summer, Relaxing, Uplifting, Motivational, etc.
- The Main Instruments: Electric Guitar, Bass, Drums, Piano, Synthesizer, Violins, etc.
How many tags for one song?
As a main rule, 5-6 tags are more than enough: two genres/subgenres, one or two instruments, one or two themes&moods. Since you will only add a handful of tags, it is important to choose those that describe your tags best. Many songs are a mixture of several subgenres and include a lot more than two instruments. Choose those tags that are most prevalent in the song.
Yes, there can be too many tags
But would my song not be more successful if I would add a thousand tags so that it would appear everywhere? The answer is a clear No! Remember that the more accurate your tags are, the easiest it will be for people to find your track.
Note: every track is moderated manually by Jamendo's team and tags can be removed if there are too many.
